Jarret and I jammed tonight. We went into the basement, I sat on a milk crate and he sat on a bar stool for the duration. It was a lot more comfortable tonight for some reason, and I suspect it will only get better as we jam more. (We’re set to jam again Monday.)

We went down into the basement, and ran through a few covers (Collective Soul, Three Doors Down, and yes…a def leppard song) on his babe of an acoustic guitar. It was really cool. Three Doors Down is something I’m very comfortable with vocally, and I think it shows when I sing that style of music. We ran through Kryptonite and Here Without You, concluding that Here Without You is actually written tuned down in the first place, so why make it any harder?

Collective Soul I’m beginning to like, but our rendition of Def Leppard’s “Hysteria” was certainly fun, enthusiastic, and had a little different touch to it. I’m lucky to have a guitarist who’s primary influence was Steve Clark…and who actually knows what I mean when I say “sparkle lounge”.

So yeah…we meet up again Monday. I’ve gotta work on learning these two (of five) originals that we demoed on my cellphone this evening. The first one, called “Secondhand Dreams” is (obviously) being played and written acoustically, but certainly has a feel that it’s going toward an electric ballad style song. Jarret was really impressed by my rendition of this tune, because while he sang through the chorus I sang a harmony part that he’d never envisioned (but quickly became enthusiastic about).

“Keep doing that!” he said, “I love it!”

So, officially my first fingerprint on the song has been placed. And, the baby is developing pretty quickly. I can’t wait to actually sit down and learn the song to a point where I can really put my own touch on it.
